Projects

Many projects have been carried out since 1998, including the Minehead Farmers' Market and the Timber ReUse company.  These are the current projects:

Community Woodland - an opportunity to learn about woodland management

The Community Woodland site on the edge of Minehead is progressing well.  A licence from the Exmoor National Park has now been granted. It plans to involve local people, as volunteers and potentially as woodland management students, teaching forestry management skills, encouraging conservation, biodiversity and wildlife and helping to reduce carbon emissions by careful woodland management.

Landlords' project - improving energy efficiency in private rented properties

Our newest project aims to find ways to make private rented properties more energy efficient. Working with partners WSC, WSAB and others It plans to create a database of landlords and properties; to support and promote the WSC's Landlord Accreditation scheme and to pilot a feasibility study to find ways of funding improvements in a small group of properties as an exemplar. Additionally it aims to provide expert training in carrying out energy surveys for one or two members of our existing energy team.

Energy Efficiency Campaign - adapting to need

Our energy work is a permanent feature. It shifts its emphasis according to need and current local and national initiatives. Its basic aim is to reduce carbon emissions by making homes more energy efficient and helping residents to understand how to save energy. It also encourages the installation of microrenewables and community energy initiatives. The Landlords and tenants project is an example of a specific piece of work that comes under this broad heading.

 Surviving Winter

This project is now in its third winter. Forum 21 has been involved in identifying elderly people who can't afford to keep warm in winter and making them grants from the Somerset Community Foundation (SCF). This year we already have over 95 applicants. It's one of our most useful projects: this outreach work means we can visit people who are often isolated and out of contact with support services.

SCF funds this work by inviting donations from pensioners who do not need their winter fuel payment. To find out more, visit www.justgiving.com/Somerset-Community-Found-Surviving-Winter-Appeal

The Steam Coast Trail - cycle paths for West Somerset

The Steam Coast Trail is soon to become a reality in West Somerset, bringing much-needed cycle paths to the area.  This started life as a Forum 21 project, but is now a separate organisation. For more information see  www.steamcoasttrail.org
